Gateball A Winner For All Ages

What happens when you cross croquet with elements of 20/20 cricket, but design it so anyone can play? The answer is 'gateball' and it's a whole lot of fun, with local clubs operating in Redcliffe and Deception Bay.

Gateball is a mallet-based sport that originated from Japan. Games only last 30 minutes, which has led to its being described as the 20/20 of croquet. It has also been compared to putt-putt golf or snooker on grass.

Redcliffe Gateball Club president, Geoff Morris, sais the club was established in 2014 and its members are among more than 10 million gateball players worldwide.

Members of the club began representing Australia at international gateball events as far back as 2010.

Our team recently qualified first in Australia and competed in the World Gateball Championships in Brazil in September 2018,� Mr Morris said.

While there are ample opportunities to compete locally, nationally and overseas, it is also a great social sport for those seeking fitness and fun.

It is suitable for all levels of fitness and abilities. We love the inclusive nature of gateball and want to make it accessible to as many people as we can.�

The sport has been growing in popularity locally, leading to the establishment of the Deception Bay Gateball Club in January 2018.

Deception Bay Gateball president, Ros Crowe, agrees that gateball is a fantastic sport for all ages from 6 to 96�.



We play in mixed teams and sometimes there can be two generations of people from the same family playing together,� Ms Crowe said.

It is easy to learn and is limited to 30-minute games. In Japan, they even have inter-generational competitions with up to three generations playing together.�

The Deception Bay Gateball Club will host the Sunshine Coast Regional Croquet Clubs Tournament Gateball event in April.
