Between The Tides
For a window of time, the vast coastal landscape of Scarborough Beach will become a fitting backdrop for an art installation organised by local contemporary art group Carte Blanche.

Artists will use found objects and recyclable materials, which will be displayed between low and high tide to bring focus to the fragility of an ever-changing environment.

Carte Blanche visual artist Trudy Stephens said that this year's event was themed Transformation.

It relates to the core meaning of Between the Tides in changing everyday articles (often discarded objects), into art works, she said.

The free event, which has been running for several years and is supported by the Moreton Bay Arts Council, is accepting artwork submissions from the local community.

Carte Blanche visual artist Ruby Purple said the open-air exhibition embraced both artists and audience members alike.

Our event is a community engagement activity; we encourage other artists and students, community groups, and schools to get involved, Ruby said.

Trudy said that this year's event would be in a new location that was chosen two years ago, but due to COVID restrictions was postponed until 2021.

This part of the Moreton Bay foreshore has some remaining mangroves, is a wonderful habitat for birds, and is an example of the low lying coastal environment, she said.

It is this connection between environment and artistic expression that makes the new setting so poignant.

For us the goal is to surprise, interest, and engage people in a different view of art, Trudy said.

It's also a great location from a practical standpoint, allowing access for abled and disabled persons and being surrounded by beautiful parklands for families to picnic and interact with the display.

We have included a coffee van each year, important in adding a relaxing, casual feel to the event.

Carte Blanche has worked collaboratively to produce successful art exhibitions in an array of local regional art galleries over the last 10 years.

Attendees are encouraged to use the booking process via Eventbrite. If you would like more information or wish to participate, please email Carte Blanche via carteblancheart1@gmail.com.
