Local Artists Ready To Shine
Local artists are ready to showcase their talent to the public this month in two separate exhibitions that are sure to create a fervour of local pride.

The Redcliffe Art Society (RAS) is once again putting on two free separate exhibitions by members to display their works and compete with other talented artists for prize money. The first is the prestigious Exhibition of Excellence, showcasing 50 of the local area's best artists, and the second is the biannual For the Love of Art exhibition of novice through to experienced artists.

RAS President Janice Charlish said from landscape to streetscape paintings, figures, portraits, waterscapes, still-life, abstract, contemporary, and drawing, there was an abundance of artistic talent in our region.

Whilst art is a personal expression, it also embodies emotions that others can identify with, Janice said. The public has always supported our art and the stories it tells through the art, so what better way to appreciate local creativity by inviting everyone to come view our work.

With the Exhibition of Excellence being held in the recently opened Redcliffe Art Gallery on Irene Street, and the For the Love of Art exhibition being held in the Old Fire Station Gallery on Oxley Avenue, the competitions also coincide with the 60th anniversary of RAS, where the public is also invited to celebrate the official opening with a cake at the Old Fire Station Gallery on Sunday, 11 July, at 2pm.

And for those who attend the Exhibition of Excellence, the public can also vote in the People's Choice Award for best artist, Janice said.

Last year's participant and RAS vice-president Deb Darke, whose self-portrait won second prize overall, said that she would be entering again and looking forward to local residents coming to see the beauty and diversity of local art.

These exhibitions exist to make art accessible to the public, and they're important because of the long, respected history of RAS and because it continues to inspire and encourage artists today, Deb said.
