Youth Musos Now Have a Voice
Youth on the peninsula now have a new voice and a new way to express their selves.

Thanks to an initiative called Young Mic, aspiring musicians under 18 can now perform at an open mic afternoon locally once a month.

Youth Mic was started by Amy Bryant, a local musician and music teacher who noticed there was nowhere for young people to have their music and voices heard in public.

I wanted to provide talented kids [with] the chance to drag their instruments out of their bedrooms and to an audience,ť Amy says.

Young Mic has been a huge success since being launched in November 2016, with a great mix of male and female artist from 7 to 17 years old performing.

The first open mic was incredible, with about 15 young performers who brought their families, and also stopped locals in their tracks as they walked pass,'' Amy says.

The room was just buzzing with great energy.ť Performers can choose to accompany themselves on their own instruments or use a backing track. They can perform solo or in a duo.

Amy says Young Mic is a great first step for young talent to perform in front of an audience.

The idea of a monthly open mic ultimately means we are building confidence in the younger generations in a supportive environment,'' she says.

As a full-time performer myself, I would absolutely love to mentor any kids that would be interested in a future in the music industry.''

Young mic will be held once a month at a local venue. The next one will be held at Brick Bistro, Redcliffe, on March 25.

n Performers can register online at youngmicqld.com and pay a $10 registration fee. Any venues interested in hosting an afternoon should contact Amy via the website.
