Mousetrap Theatre has taken The Wizard of Oz for a whirl, transforming the all-time classic into a pantomime, which is scheduled to land in the Redcliffe-based playhouse this January.

All of the characters from the musical are set to engage with the audience, culminating in a boisterous sing-along and dynamic show adapted by local writer John Morley.

Mousetrap Theatre director Barb Wainwright said theatregoers could expect a spectacle involving music, a fantasy plot, audience participation and plenty of dancing.

“We have many colourful and fun favourites including the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and of course Dorothy ' all brought to life by some very brilliant performances.”

The character of Dorothy will be shared by two accomplished thespians, both of whom have lovely singing voices and have won acting awards at the South East Drama Festivals.

“Both Ruby Marriott and Miranda Matthews are perfectly suited to the role of Dorothy,” Barb said.

The other roles in the production have been rounded out by a group of very skilled and experienced talents who each bring their own unique brand of razzle dazzle.

“Avery Star Hill has been cast as Tin Man, and he is a very entertaining actor who has previously been in a production of The Addams Family. Erin Lowry brings a lot of experience to the role of the Scarecrow, previously playing in many comedy roles,” Barb said.

The actors will be sure to elicit lots of laughter from the crowd (adults and children alike), as well as awe with their amazing vocal and dramatic ability.

Barb said the directing process had been incredibly rewarding, and she was looking forward to seeing the show come together from beginning to end.

“You are able to put your own ideas into the story as well as what is written, also it is fun to help design and make the costumes,” she said.
