The sport of croquet is growing rapidly in participation, mainly through versions of the game such as the team-orientated gateball and the more popular golf croquet. The sport is even taught as part of the school curriculum in New Zealand.

Association croquet, the traditional form of the game known as snooker on the lawn for its complex rules and challenges, will be on full display when Eildon Croquet Club hosts the 2021 AC Men’s Open Singles later this month.

Eildon Croquet Club publicity officer Steve Helleur said the club was very excited to be hosting this prestigious annual tournament. “Organised by Croquet QLD, we have to bid for it as it is popular, and we also have to have infrastructure and people such as tournament managers, referees and the likes, to run it,” he said.

The tournament will be open to anyone who is an Australian Croquet Association member and should attract high level competitive entries such as previous winners Les Watson and Greg Whymark. Local association croquet player entrants are likely to be joined by members from fellow clubs Toombul, Wynnum, and throughout Queensland and interstate.

“We had someone from Ballina, another from Darwin, and even as far away as Perth come to play previously,” Steve said.

Eildon Croquet Club boasts first class facilities. Last year the club received a council grant and had irrigation installed as well as kitchen renovations carried out by local tradespeople.

The players will compete on four immaculately presented lawns, cared for by a qualified volunteer who was a former curator with the Scarborough Bowls Club.

“We’re proud to be able to display our club as we think we have got one of the better lawns in Brisbane,” Steve said.

Ideally located within walking distance of the scenic Woody Point waterfront, visitors can come along and watch this fascinating game. They’ll be warmly welcomed by members, with the club asking that everyone observe social distancing rules.

There’ll be a presentation of trophies for the winner and runner-up upon completion of the second day’s play. Closing date for players to register for the tournament is 16 July.
