The Peninsula is a popular location for seniors to choose to settle down in retirement with Redcliffe offering a lot of social activities and entertainment for the over 55s.

One of those activities that combines music and socialising with those under six and over 55 is Hey Dee Ho’s intergenerational music classes available at multiple venues in Moreton Bay North.

Joanna Predo is the owner of the local Hey Dee Ho franchise and has a long history in music.

“I am a professional jazz singer and pianist. I’ve studied at various universities in QLD and NSW, including the Queensland Conservatorium of music,” Joanna said.

Joanna or one of her staff conduct all the intergenerational music classes and Joanna states, “All of my staff either have experience or qualifications with performing, education or working with children. They could be teachers, musicians, dancers, actors or early learning educators.”

The local intergenerational music classes are held three to four times a month across Redcliffe and Brighton with classes planned into 2020. Initial interest in these classes has been so positive there is a good chance of growth as the program moves forward.

Sessions are free to attend but bookings are essential. Each class runs for 45 minutes and you need not bring anything with you although some basic percussion instruments and puppets are provided for use by those attending the class.

Joanna said the classes were “about spreading love, kindness and joy”.

“Music is the language of us all, and so is kindness. There is an incredible amount of loneliness amongst the residents. To see them light up when they see the children, when the children interact with them, and when they hear the music is absolutely amazing,” Joanna said.

You can find out more about intergenerational music classes and secure your place at upcoming sessions via the ‘InterGenMusicQLD’ Facebook group. You can search the events for local sessions.
