Looking to join a cost-friendly sport that promotes a family environment? If you are, then softball could be for you.

This month, the Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association gets their 2019/20 fixtures season underway.

Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association president, Carrie Te Wani, said a lot of teams played on the Peninsula, ranging from A1 premiers through to C Grade.

“We have women just starting out who have never played before, and we welcome that as they can start out in the lower C Grade, learn things about the game and then progress through to the sort of level of game that they want to play at,” Carrie said.

Betty Paxton founded the Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association in 1962 and is still actively involved in the club.

They have eight diamond fields, three lit for night games. Two diamonds with small grandstands – the Betty Paxton Diamond and the Shiree Wagner Memorial Diamond – the latter named in memory of a former club president’s sister.

There’s a fully stocked canteen staffed by volunteers, with a licensed bar open after midday on game days once the juniors have competed.

Softball clubs affiliated with The Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association are Bets Vets, Brighton Roosters, Cougars, F Troop, Lakers, Redcliffe PCYC and Tat 2 Dragons.

Some of their women’s rep players include Jade Wall, who’s been selected in the Open Australian womens for qualifiers. Her dad, John Wall, was a former club president, and her brother Jonathon still plays. Bree-Anna Butler recently returned from competing in the US at the under 19 World Championships.

Carrie said they had a lot of rep players from juniors through to seniors, due mainly to their coaches including Helen Maree Butler (Bree-Anna Butler’s mum).

“We are lucky to have some very talented coaches, who just for the pure love of the game continue to turn up and coach every year,” Carrie said.

Their weekend fixtures for female and male players are promoted as fun days. Find out more via www.redcliffesoftball.sport...
