Welcoming Places Highlight Indigenous Culture

Welcoming Places HIGHLIGHT INDIGENOUS CULTURE
Thu 23 May
Time : 10am - 11:30am
Where : REDCLIFFE LIBRARY
Address : 476 OXLEY AVENUE, REDCLIFFE
Peninsula residents are being invited to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander’s culture through a Welcoming Places program at Redcliffe Library.

Spokesperson for Lifestyle and Amenity, Councillor Denise Sims, said the Welcoming Places featured a dedicated library space with community-chosen artwork, culturally specific newspapers, resources and a program of events highlighting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island culture.

“They also provide opportunities for small gatherings and community events, to host guest speaker and writers’ sessions, cultural learning, storytelling, and performances,” Cr Sims said.

Councillor for Division 6, Koliana Winchester, said Moreton Bay was rich with traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples so it was exciting to be able to learn the traditions and values of indigenous peoples through Welcoming Places.

The next Welcoming Places event at Redcliffe library is a National Sorry Day Morning Tea being held on Thursday 23 May with Dr (Aunty) Ruth Hegarty, a highly respected Aboriginal Elder and author.

The event is free but bookings are required. For more details search for ‘Sorry Day’ at
