One person's unwanted items are often another person's treasures; just ask the Collins family of Margate, when they participate in the nationwide Garage Sale Trail, this month.
Local households, schools, and community groups will join more than 400,000 people across Australia on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October for the ninth annual Garage Sale Trail.
Katrina Collins said this was the third year her family was participating in the event, which is billed as a fun way to stop waste going to landfill.
It's the best day to have a garage sale as there are lots of people out and about on the trail, Katrina said.
Garage sales are quite a tradition for Katrina and her family.
We normally have a garage sale every six months. We have a clean-out and everyone in the family drops their unwanted stuff at our house. At the end of a garage sale, I pack up the stuff we have left and donate.
We are also a family of crafters, including my 92-year-old nanna who loves to crochet tea towels, jug covers, and doilies, which my mum makes into dream catchers. My husband makes furniture from recycled timber and the kids love to help with craft and have made recycled paper.
The Collins family will have around 1,000 items on offer at their garage sale, including pre-loved clothing, toys, succulents, tools, books, old records, handmade crafts, and shabby chic furniture (hand-painted by Katrina).
Moreton Bay Regional Council is encouraging other local households and groups to host a Garage Trail Sail event.
Council spokesperson for Asset Construction and Maintenance, Cr Adam Hain, said that getting involved could help educate kids and the community about the positive impact we can all make when we buy secondhand.
