Rockin' 4 The Homeless: You Am I

Story: Donna Roberts

A stellar lineup of upcoming local acts mixed with legendary Australian rock bands will take to the Picnic Hill stage for the annual Rockin’ 4 the Homeless event this August.

Headlining the gig are energetic rock bands You Am I and The Superjesus, who will be joined by Diana Anaid and Team Utopia, along with a number of local bands to round out the day.

Organiser, Dan Nebe, who also fronts popular rock outfit Team Utopia, created the event to raise both awareness and much-needed funds for Redcliffe's homeless.

“It came about after doing the Flood Relief concerts with a group of friends,” Dan said.

“We decided to do something every year for charity and a friend mentioned she was concerned about the homeless plight here in Redcliffe.

“It was the perfect choice for a cause, so it just grew from there.”

From the events held during the first three years, money raised was shared between The Breakfast Club, Chameleon Housing and the Redcliffe Area Youth Space, with each group receiving $21,000 to use towards local projects.

The past two events together raised more than $100,000 that went directly to The Breakfast Club and opened the hub that services homeless clients two days a week.

This year, the goal is to raise even more,“It’s important to me to help community groups, especially those non-funded by any tier of government,” Dan said.

“The fact that [The Breakfast Club] are one hundred percent volunteers makes it essential to assist them.

“I have seen what they do first hand and watch in awe every time.”

In addition to the great music, attendees will be able to enjoy a wide range of food trucks and drinks from the licensed bar, purchase merchandise from The Breakfast Club’s stand, or relax in the chill out zone.

Dan said to come prepared for a big day, “[Bring] plenty of money for raffles and auctions, a hat, sunscreen and a feel-good attitude,” Dan said.
