Celebrating A Rugby Icon

One of the more important dates on the local rugby calendar is upon us. The Redcliffe community is being invited by Redcliffe Rugby to celebrate and watch its annual Rua Baker Memorial Challenge match in early August.

Brian Hetherington, senior secretary of Redcliffe Rugby, said the Rua Baker Memorial Challenge match was staged to honour the memory of club member, Rua Baker.

“This event means so much to the Redcliffe club as Rua Baker had been instrumental in developing our junior to senior Redcliffe Rugby pathway,” Brian said.

Rua Baker is a household name in rugby circles. To honour his legacy, Rua Baker’s widow, Jill, arranged with Redcliffe Senior Rugby to hold an annual Rua Baker Memorial Challenge match.

In previous years, this annual match was played between the Redcliffe Senior Demons team and the Redcliffe Veterans Rusty Old Demons team. But this year, the match takes on special significance because of the 10 year memorial anniversary of Mr Baker’s passing.

To mark this special occasion, the match will have an added international flavour. A New Zealand rugby team comprising of players from Rua Baker’s family and his Kiwi hometown have been invited to fly over. They will take on a combined local team of Redcliffe Rugby seniors and veteran players. By all reports, neither side will be holding back, which should mean some excellent rugby being played.

Brian said everyone at Redcliffe Rugby was excited to host this event, and the combined Redcliffe Rugby team was really looking forward to playing.

“It will be a fun filled day for all involved, including the spectators,” Brian said.

The club will be making food and drink packages available to purchase on the day, so bring the kids and make it a fun family afternoon while honouring a true legend of rugby. Entry to the game is free.
