'an Insider's View: Touring With The Rolling Stones'

Story: Donna Roberts

Local literary emporium, Wilbury's Books and Bits, will host an intimate and exclusive evening with former Rolling Stones tour manager and author, Sam Cutler.

Sam describes himself as a people person, so is looking forward to sharing and swapping stories of life on the road, with event attendees at the August event.

That's the thing about being a tour manager ' if you don't enjoy meeting people, you can't do it, Sam said.

People tell me about their first experiences with the Rolling Stones ' seeing them live or introducing their own kids to the music.

Sam recounts a dinner in London, early in his career, with Charlie Watts, drummer of the Rolling Stones, which he will never forget.

I saw this guy meaningfully holding an autograph book for Charlie to sign and I put my hand up and said, 'Whoa mate, we're having dinner here! Can you come back a bit later?' but Charlie said 'It's okay' and signed the autograph, Sam said.

Charlie turned to me and said 'Don't forget - that's the guy who's paying for dinner' and I never forgot that.

The fans are the most important thing.

Sam's life on the road will definitely provide a colourful backdrop to his storytelling, during the event celebrating his book 'You Can't Always Get What You Want'.

I'm looking forward to being there. I promise to tell lots of naughty stories, Sam said.

Sam's music tastes are not stuck in the 60s or 70s though.

I love flamenco, African, early blues...it's a huge field ' music is a broad church, Sam said.

When you're walking into a garden that has 2000 flowers in it, it's a bit perverse to only be there to look at the roses.

The event will feature a live reading by Sam followed by a Q&A session and an acoustic set from Brisbane singer/songwriter, Jackie Marshall, as well as refreshments.

If you are keen to attend, book in via the event listing on the Wilbury's Books and Bits Facebook page.
