Funk, Folk, Blues And Redcliffe Roots: Dillon Carlsson

May 28, 2019
Local musician Dillon Carlsson from six-piece groove band, The Ninth Chapter, is the first to admit that their rehearsals are a little unconventional.

“Most of us know each other since school days, so it’s amazing to still be playing great shows, given the fact we’re now scattered from Redcliffe to Kiama,” Dillon said.

“Given the geographical spread, it certainly makes rehearsing ‘interesting’.”

The Ninth Chapter boasts Jaz Munro (guitar and lead vocals), Glen McClymont (percussion and vocals), Zac Page (drums), Dan Bowland (bass), Tom Hilliar (trumpet) and Dillon Carlsson (saxophones and flute).

Dillon’s ties to the Peninsula began in the year 2000, when he moved to Redcliffe, after travelling around Australia.

“I’ve worked at Cascade Place, for CPL – Choice, Passion, Life, since then,” Dillon said.

“The lifestyle is laidback, [and] you get access to the city easily if you want it.

“We love raising our family here.”

With more than a decade of touring and three EPs to their name, The Ninth Chapter recently released their self-titled debut album and latest single ‘My Own Time’.

The Ninth Chapter is renowned for pairing their heavy groove with thumping horns when playing live, but on record the group sculpt a vast landscape of sounds, moods and tempos.

“The [album] has been a really exciting achievement for us,” Dillon said.

“There’s some real variety on this with some high-energy out-and-out funk tracks, alongside some smooth more folky songs.

“I think it pays homage to our roots and still indulges in the essence of what the ‘Chapter’ is all about.”

With a host of album launch shows to play and a slot at the popular Blues on Broadbeach festival in May, Dillon is looking forward to future opportunities with the band.

The Blues on Broadbeach festival was a significant highlight, “but there’s a string of others we’re all pumped for,” Dillon said.

“Byron, Grafton, Bellingen, Gold Coast, Sydney are among the destinations.”
