Lovely Looks, Local Fun!
The racing season is galloping towards us again, but you don't need to go to the track to enjoy it. Step out locally, and look great!

In 2018, as in many years before, fashion is at the forefront of the minds of race-lovers. No element of racing chic is more popular or talked about than the hat - a unique and stylish 'crown' to an outfit.

Maree Starkey is a fashion designer, based in Scarborough, who specialises in millinery - the craft of making headwear.

I just love doing it, Maree tells us. If you're designing clothes there are certain restrictions with fit and fashion, but with millinery the imagination can go wild.

Maree has always been a dressmaker, but she also studied design, couture finishes and millinery ten years ago. Most of my work is predominantly for the racing season, but weddings are year round, and bridal hairpieces are always fun! Maree said.

What's 'in' varies year after year ' even if you're celebrating the Melbourne Cup locally ' and Maree is happy to tell us the latest trends. A big brim on the race hat is probably the biggest thing at the moment. They haven't been around for quite a few years but they're back, which is great. They're good fun!

In Maree's line of work, her clients' desires differ; she says, There's the serious racing fan who wants a fabulous big piece that's going to stand out, and then others who just want something a bit different.

Maree approaches millinery as an art, and every piece she creates is a one-off. You know that whatever you get you won't see again; they're individual.

Racing fashion identity and publisher of 'Ladies in Racing' magazine, Cathryn Meredith agrees, telling us that in 2018 originality is still an important aspect of a stylish racing outfit.

For the Melbourne Cup it's always about bright colour, and things that are a little bit 'out- there', so something that is unique and original is usually good, Cathryn says. Lace-brims in hats are in, as well as unusual angles in hemlines, dresses and outfits in general.

It doesn't have to be complicated, but wherever you celebrate the Melbourne Cup, it definitely should be fun!

Good luck!
