Bake it to the limit
Fancy yourself as a bit of a cook? Well, the proof is in the pudding ... or the cake, or the scones, or the shortbread, or the jam... Whatever your specialty may be, throw your apron on and get ready for a bake-off at the annual Queensland Country Women’s Association Cooking Competition. Anyone can enter, and it’s free!

This year it’s being held on Thursday, 19th July at the QCWA Hall. The competition is split into two main categories; baking and preserves. And there is a section for under 17’s too.

Sandra Woolford is one of the judges, and will also be presenting a live demonstration on how to bake prize-winning scones and shortbread. Sandra has had her fair share of first prizes over the years.

“I heard about the cooking competition in 2012, someone suggested I enter my scones, and I won in a few categories, including the rich fruit cake. I wound up going to the state competition in Toowoomba with three firsts, and I won there with my rich fruitcake, against all of those wonderful countrywomen.”

A surprise came soon afterwards for Sandra. “I had to do an interview with ABC Radio, and it aired for 23 minutes, about how to make a fruit cake. Since then I’ve entered again in different categories. Last year I got first prize for my Apply Jelly, the year before for my shortbread.”

The baking section has a range of classes, including those where competitors vie for the best Sultana Cake, Date Loaf, Carrot Cake, Shortbread and one for ‘Any Other Slice’, allowing entrants to show their finest creative flair.

The preserves section has classes for Jams, Marmalade, Relish, Sweet Mustard Pickles, Apple Jelly and Chutney, and all of the products entered in the competition are for sale right after the judging!

Whether you enter the competition and win a prize for your talents, or you just want to pop in for a lesson on baking or to pick up a prize-winning cake or jar of relish, don’t miss this tasty gathering!

QCWA Cooking Competition will be held on Thursday 19 July at 16 Victoria Avenue, Woody Point. The Scone and Shortbread Baking Demonstration starts at 9am, with judging through the morning. To register your interest or get a copy of the Category and Class Schedule, contact Sandra on 0418 772 831.
