The name’s Wheate. Craig Wheate. And he is licensed to grill with the launch of Craft Burgers & Beer, Clontarf’s newest boutique casual dining experience.

Craig says it was his love of handcrafted burgers, locally sourced ingredients and craft beer that inspired the idea for the restaurant.

“I have owned Craft Burgers & Beer for a month, but the concept has taken over two years to develop with testing recipes, tasting a wide range of craft beers and designing the branding for the restaurant,” he says.

“The easy-going Redcliffe lifestyle works perfectly with our restaurant, and we have started to develop a regular base of families, day trippers and retirees enjoying the restaurant.

“Who doesn’t love a craft beer with their burger on a Sunday afternoon looking across Moreton Bay from our outdoor seating area?”

As the former executive chef of Brisbane’s Hilton Hotel and The Ritz-Carlton, and with extensive travel experience throughout Asia, the Middle East and the United States, Craig is well versed on quality food and flavours.

“Our name, Craft Burgers & Beer, means just that,” he says.

“We offer a great selection of burgers, which includes hand-formed, preservative-free Queensland beef; hormone-free, hand-crumbed chicken breast fillets; a chickpea and corn vegetarian burger; and we also cater for gluten-free and vegan diets.

“In addition, we have some awesome sides to accompany your meals such as beer-battered onion rings, jalapeño poppers, wild chipotle buffalo wings and our popular beer-battered fries are imported from the [United] States.

“ We also make all of our own relishes, mayonnaise sauces and chipotle sauces for the burgers, so the flavours are unique.”

There’s also a wide selection of premium craft brews on offer including Stone & Wood, Newstead Brewery, Mountain Goat, Cricketers Arms, Burleigh Heads Brewery and Little Creatures, as well as other local and international beers, ciders and wine.

Craig says the feedback from the local community has been overwhelming.

“Craft Burgers & Beer was founded in Clontarf, and we appreciate all the amazing support the community has so far provided,” he says.

“We have employed over 14 locals and are opening a second store in Brisbane in October. We would also love to obtain a site on the waterfront in Redcliffe in the near future.”
