Nostalgia Wins the Day at RAS Exhibition of Excellence
A huge congratulations to local artist Julie Purcell! Her painting, inspired by a family photograph from the eighties, has been awarded first prize overall winner in the highly regarded Redcliffe Art Society (RAS) Exhibition of Excellence 2023.

The oil painting, titled EBWTY (Everyone’s Beautiful When They’re Young), is in a contemporary impressionistic style and depicts a happy memory most of us can relate to - a family party in the backyard at home. For the artist, at that time home was in Jamieson Street, Redcliffe. As with reminiscences from long ago, the details are a little hazy, which is exactly the nostalgic effect the artist intended.

A serious painter trained in graphic design and fine art and with many solo exhibitions and other awards under her belt, Julie Purcell said it was still very reassuring to have her work evaluated by outside judges.

“I chose to enter this painting as I felt I’d achieved a quality that I’d been chasing for a few years,” Julie said.

“I’ve mostly painted landscapes, scenes from the bush, so figurative painting is a new area. It’s quite a leap to tackle painting people.

“I’m a full-time artist so this accolade is very important confirmation that what I do is working.”

Now in its 66th year, the exhibition is the Redcliffe Art Society’s premier event, showcasing 60 of the best artworks from members. First and second prizes are awarded in six categories along with highly commended and special awards.

As first prize overall winner, Julie is invited to exhibit in the prestigious 15 Artists exhibition between 25 November and 10 February at the Redcliffe Art Gallery.

This is the second time Julie has been the overall winner, the first time being in 2021. She said being part of Redcliffe Art Society had helped her achieve a high level of professionalism.

“It’s great to have such talented peers push me to work harder,” she said.

The RAS Exhibition of Excellence 2023 is showing until 11 November. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to see what talented artists we have and vote for your favourite for the People’s Choice Award.
