Candle Lighting Ceremony For Domestic Violence

Published On : Apr 24, 2022
May marks the month for Domestic and Family Violence Prevention and a National Candle Lighting Vigil is being held around the country to honour the victims whose lives were taken due to domestic violence.

Hosted by Encircle, the Candle Lighting Ceremony is taking place at Redcliffe’s Encircle Neighbourhood Centre on 4 May and will offer a safe place for those who have been affected by domestic violence to come together as a community.

One in four women in Australia have experienced at least one incident of violence by a partner. On average, one woman is killed every week because of partner violence.

Counselling and Families Manager, Lisa Boyd, says the vigil is an important event in the community.

“In past years, approximately 80-100 people have gathered in Redcliffe including survivors of domestic and family violence and community members,” Lisa said. “This event highlights the devastating impact of domestic violence and is a powerful opportunity for the community to gather in remembrance and stand against violence in our community.”

This year, Encircle is encouraging community members to submit a photo of themselves or their family holding a candle, as a show of support for those impacted by domestic and family violence.
